Amboseli Airport

Amboseli airport is located in Amboseli National Park which lies south of Nairobi and is famous for its prolific elephant population and views of immense Mount Kilimanjaro, across the border in Tanzania. The airport has a single asphalt runway that measures 1,180 metres (3,870 ft) in length. There are scheduled daily flights from Nairobi to Amboseli and there are several airlines that serve this route including Air Kenya and SafariLink. The nearest international airport to Amboseli is the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, a flying distance of 30-40 minutes.

Travelers would need to know that some of the lodges and camps in Amboseli have private airstrips for private chartered flights such as Amboseli Porini Camp. In cases where the travellers are using private chartered flights, it is imperative to fly to the airstrip nearest to their accommodation to avoid unnecessarily long transfers which also happen to be rather expensive.

Amboseli Airstrip (Code ASV)

Amboseli Airstrip is the only airstrip in Amboseli National Park, located at its heart — with a terminal building and both a tarmacked and dirt runway. Its position provides aerial views of the park's lakes and swamps to most planes using it. The geographical coordinates of this airstrip are: 2° 38' 42.00"S, 37° 15' 0.00"E (Latitude: -2.64500; Longitude:37.25000). Some of the lodges and camps served by this airstrip includes Amboseli Serena Lodge, Amboseli Sopa Lodge, Elewana Tortilis Camp, Oltukai Lodge, Kilima Safari Camp, Amboseli Elephant Trust, Amboseli AA Lodge, Tawi Lodge among others.

Wilson Airport, Nairobi (Code WIL)

Wilson airport is the domestic airport of Nairobi, located along Langata road, fairly close to Carnivore Restaurant and on the way to Karen and Nairobi National Park. The airport is small but fairly busy and efficient. Transfer time from city center is 20 minutes traffic free but more like an 45 minutes in normal traffic, and most local flights require that you be at the airport at least an hour before the flight.

Schedule of Flights

Typically all the main airlines have only morning flights, with the same aircraft turning back to Wilson after every flights. The flight time is approx. 40 minutes to 1 hour. See the schedule below.

Due to the sheer volume of passengers flying to Amboseli during the peak season months from July to October, both Safarilink and Air Kenya place an additional midday flight service to handle the passenger numbers. During these months we recommend booking early enough to secure seats.

Masai Mara Fly~In Safaris

Flying Safari package to Masai Mara are convenient due to the short one hour flight versus the 5 to 6 hour road journey from Nairobi.
